THE LED ROBOTS

LED is one of man's greatest innovations, however like any other great innovation it had to go through the same industrialization process.

LED's Development

LEDs were developed during the post-World War II era; during the war there was a potent interest in materials for light and microwave detectors. A variety of semiconductor materials were developed during this research effort, and their light interaction properties were investigated in some detail. During the 1950s, it became clear that the same materials that were used to detect light could also be used to generate light. Researchers at AT&T Bell Laboratories were the first to exploit the light-generating properties of these new materials in the 1960s. The LED was a forerunner, and a fortuitous byproduct, of the laser development effort. The tiny colored lights held some interest for industry, because they had advantages over light bulbs of a similar size: LEDs use less power, have longer lifetimes, produce little heat, and emit colored light. From War Applications to Industrial. Artisans and electricians began to develop an economical and practical application for daily use. Less Power more Light, this has been LED's core selling point over the past 5 decades. In the olden days LED development was quite taxing and as such LED manufacturing has been tackled from a different angle which is: "Less Manpower, More Light".

TODAY'S LED MASS PRODUCTION

Nowadays individual manual labor is inefficient and as such, an intensive mechanized process is required to be able to mass produce. Craftsmen are replaced with assembly lines. This is not to say that automated production results are not adequate. However as our trust for technology grows, the need to check through the end results produced by these machines, gradually disappear into the bliss. Hence leading to low-quality end products.

However on the other side of the spectrum, it would be close to impossible to have the manpower required to double-check millions of mass-produced bulbs everyday. Now these statements might seem paradoxical, however for any riddle there is an answer.

Nowadays, most "Smart Factories" have a workable AI designed to execute a specific set of tasks. Obviously it is not enough to have an air-tight production, but unlike humans, AI has the potential to evolve in an exponential rate. As such with further advances to technology; the paradox can be broken.

With and evolved AI, robots can work semi-autonomously on a much wider range of tasks. Beginning in the work cell, robots with “smarts” built-in draw from a cloud-based database of “lessons” and information to:

  • Recognize equipment and parts in a work cell and perform applicable behaviors and make “auto-complete” suggestions, e.g. recognize a tool or piece of equipment and be able to use it correctly
  • Use pattern matching to suggest error handling best practices
  • Apply a database of corrective suggestions to help task designers (that would be the robot’s human colleague) find ways to modify a task or work cell in response to a fault
  • Analyze motion profile and behavior against a global fault database to identify opportunities to optimize a task
