Ready for Stage 6 of the ErP Directive?
On September 1, 2018 — inefficient non-directional household lamps will no longer be allowed to be introduced to the EU market as per the Stage 6 of the ErP Directive 2005/32/EC — a commission regulation with regards to Ecodesign requirements for non-directional household lamps.
The Stage 6 phase out was initially penned to be done in the 1st of September 2016, but the European Commission concluded that the technology was still not ready to completely replace Halogen lamps.
Besides improving the energy efficiency of lighting products in the market, this directive is onto a bigger goal. The EU pays over 1 billion Euros for energy everyday. The ErP directive is in line with the Energy Union’s mission of ensuring secure, sustainable, competitive, and affordable energy through efficiency, further reducing energy consumption by 20% in 2020.
However, this Directive does not introduce directly binding requirements for specific product categories, but rather outlines the conditions and criteria relating to environmental characteristics of products, such as energy and water waste, or lifespan, so they can be improved quickly and efficiently.
Which products does it apply to?
So, inefficient household lamps? Meaning non-directional lamps used for commercial and industrial lamps are not going to be affected, right?
No. The directive states that the criteria apply to products “placed on the market wherever they are installed or used”, which means that it applies to generally ANY non-directional lamp in the market, regardless of the location where it was installed or utilised. Even LED lighting products are included in this directive.
Furthermore, products under the following criteria are included:
- Be sold over 200,000 units per year in the European Union;
- Have a significant environmental impact;
- Have a potential for improvement.

This directive is aimed to remove least efficient energy-consuming products in the market, promoting industrial competitiveness and environmental sustainability.
